Veta 8.0 Released

Veta Intelligent Construction

The Veta 8.0 desktop software has been released with many features that benefit DOTs and paving contractors. Veta 8.0 includes innovative, powerful features and upgrades that help intelligent construction data analysis become more efficient, comprehensive, and easy to use. Supported intelligent construction technologies (ICT) include paver-mounted thermal profilers (PMTP), intelligent compaction (IC), dielectric profile systems (DPS), and other emerging innovative technologies. The Transtec Group has developed and enhanced Veta as a public-domain, map-based ICT data management software tool since 2013. The National Road Research Alliance (NRRA) currently funds the Veta through a pooled fund study.

Veta 8.0 added support for BOMAG ECONOMIZER (mini-IC roller) data, Caterpillar Machine Drive Power (MDP), and Völkel Compaction Meter Value (CMV) data. Veta 8.0 now allows multiple IC Measurement Value (ICMV) types (e.g., MDP and CMV) in the same project when using ungridded IC data. For gridded IC data, multiple ICMV types are only allowed if they are contained within the same data file.

Veta 8.0 also improved the filter features to make them easier to manage and use. A spot test manager was added to manage spot test types better and customize them with unique shapes and colors.

Several features have been added to the analysis. Paver stops close together are grouped to avoid clutter. A filter review section has been added to the analysis options for DOT inspectors to check that project filters match the expected filters or defaults. Deviations from expected filters are displayed to avoid potential mistakes or fraud. The PMTP report now includes price adjustments in customizable charts and tables for differential range statistics (DRS) and thermal segregation index (TSI) classifications.

Figure 1. New PTMP reports include the option for customizable price adjustments for both DRS and TSI.

Sublot ICMV and temperature drop curves now contain the mean PMTP temperature (displayed as the zero-pass temperature) for sublots when PMTP and IC data are used. Adding PMTP temperatures completes the compaction temperature curve and is a great quality control tool to verify balanced paving and successful compaction practices. Other features include the heat-loss curves of asphalt using the map search, which shows temperatures at a specific location over time using PMTP and IC data. Many behind-the-scenes improvements have been added to make Veta more powerful and easier to use.

Figure 2. The improved sublot summary sheet includes PMTP and IC temperatures, elapsed time between roller passes, and compaction curve information to check consistency and trouble shoot issues quickly.

An updated User’s Guide is available to walk users through the new and existing features of Veta 8.0. Check out the Veta 8.0 Release Notes for more details about the new features.

Users should note that Veta 8.0 will be the last full desktop version. The Veta Web version, funded by NRRA, is under development and will be released in 2024. Veta Web will include more ICT technologies, including material delivery management systems (MDMS), an expanded form of e-ticketing. Please join the NRRA pooled fund study to keep Veta accessible to all!

Figure 3. Veta Web is expanding to include many more ICTs and align with digital twin concepts.

Veta development is funded by the FHWA, Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), The Transtec Group, Transportation Pooled Fund TPF-5(334) Enhancement to the Intelligent Construction Data Management System (Veta) and Implementation, and TPF-5(466) “National Road Research Alliance – NRRA (Phase-II). Veta is required in AASHTO R 110 (PMTP standard), R 111 (IC standard), MP39 (ICT data standard), MP 114 (ICT data lot standard), some US State DOT’s specifications (e.g., MnDOT, MoDOT, etc.), and other worldwide agencies (e.g., Australia TMR, etc.).

Download Veta 8.0 now and enjoy its new and improved features. The Veta 8.0 installation is now available on the Microsoft Store and via conventional installation (https://www.intelligentconstruction.com/veta/).

Data Import

  • Fix: The Trimble/CAT downloader could timeout with large accounts.
  • Fix: The Trimble/CAT downloader could crash if unexpected file names were present.
  • Fix: Sometimes IC files could not be added to an existing project.
  • Fix: IC files without ICMV (static files) and files with ICMV could not be mixed in the same project.
  • Fix: IC projects containing raw data did not always have Impacts per foot calculated. Existing projects will be automatically reprocessed.
  • Fix: Some IC projects created before Veta 6 were not processed correctly. Existing projects will be automatically reprocessed.
  • Change: Some fixes and changes were made to the heading and speed calculations for raw data. Files will not be processed due to this, but other changes in this update may cause the data to be recalculated. If the headings and speeds still appear wrong, remove the files and reimport the data. However, some vendors include this data in the file and thus it will not be calculated.

Map

Filters

  • Change: Removed the change added in 7.0.48 that set the data filter for AASHTO filter groups.
  • Change: AASHTO data filters are no longer locked for AASHTO filter groups.
  • Fix: AASHTO lift and centerline offset groups did not have the data filter set unless a daily group was created at the same time.
  • Fix: Changing the project information after new daily groups had been created caused the new daily groups to be removed.

Spot Tests

  • Fix: Moving the splitter under the table caused the chart and its toolbar to resize incorrectly.

Reports

  • Fix: Filter group report for the dielectric profiler was incomplete.
  • Fix: The filter group report had blank items if a data filter did not exist.
  • Fix: Excel report better respects the “Include sublot summary” and “Include sublot details” options.
  • Change: Filters with no selections will now be reported as “All unselected” rather than “None”.

Miscellaneous
