Chinese Standard Pioneer Next-Generation Intelligent Compaction Requirements

Intelligent Compaction (IC) is one of the core technologies of the 4th revolution of construction technology. The IC standard of Heilongjiang Province, China, “Technical Specification for Intelligent Compaction Control of Highway Subgrade and Base,” (DB 23/T2940-2021) was published on August 4, 2021. The following main features of this standard are pioneers in the world to push IC to the next level:

1.Intelligent compaction (IC) needs to include independent technical requirements of “Perception, Analysis, Decision-making, and Execution – PADE.” PADE are the essential characteristics of intelligent construction and will play a vital role in standardizing the correct use of intelligent compaction technology and ensuring project quality.

2.IC rollers need to have the ability to learn the attributes of compacted mater data, process parameter data, and performance data to realize intelligent feedback control.

3.The minimum correlation coefficient between the continuous control index and spot test control index needs to be 0.8. This requirement is more stringent than most IC standards around the world that requires 0.5. This stringent requirement would promote the IC index with physical units (e.g., modulus) instead of empirical IC index (e.g., CMV) and method-based specs (e.g., roller passes).
