First Intelligent Construction Technologies Conference a Success

The first-ever International Intelligent Compaction Technologies Group (IICTG) conference was held September 26-28 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. More than 165 industry professionals were in attendance, representing manufacturing companies, public agencies, private contracting and consulting services, and academia from across North America, Europe, and Asia.

The theme of the conference was Intelligent Construction Technologies – Past and Future, covering the past 25 years of Intelligent Construction Technologies (ICT) development and looking forward to the future of the technologies. On the conference agenda were presentations, workshops, vendor exhibits, and interactive panel discussions. Some of the most popular topics covered include Intelligent Compaction Measurement Values (ICMV), drones, and Building Information Modeling (BIM).

The goal of the conference was to create a platform so all ICT users, experts, and manufacturers could collaborate and move the technology forward.

Curt Turgeon, MnDOT Pavement Engineer and IICTG Steering Committee member, said he found the wide-range of attendees to be the most beneficial aspect of the conference.

“There were professors from China, Europe, and United States providing research on near-future potential,” Turgeon said. “There were international equipment developers and support staff providing the latest in available technology. There were several contractors with firsthand experience using the equipment on today’s projects, and there were more than a dozen state DOTs representing specifiers and practitioners. The conference format provided opportunities for all to provide input and learn across all the interacting disciplines.”

Don Matthews, TSD Manager Chief Engineer at Pavement Recycling Systems, Inc. and IICTG Technical Committee member, found the conference to be beneficial for all people and organizations using ICT.

“The conference gave a great insight into both the challenges and successes that agencies, original equipment manufacturers (OEM), and contractors have experienced in intelligent construction,” said Matthews. “It also shed light on what it will take to make IC more successful and cost effective for full scale implementation in the future.”

IICTG Conference 2019

The next IICTG Conference will be held in March 2019 in Beijing, China. The theme of the second conference is Innovate for Growth and Cooperate for Win-Win. Please visit IICTG.org for more information.

About IICTG

Dr. George Chang, IICTG President and Director of Research at The Transtec Group, has been instrumental in implementing intelligent construction technologies over the past ten years, working with a diverse range of organizations. Dr. Chang began to realize that these organizations, such as state departments of transportation, contractors, and manufacturers, were all using the same types of innovative technologies and discovering new ways of using them or improving them, but there was a lack of collaboration between the groups. To build a bridge over the collaboration gap, Dr. Chang, with the help of many others, started IICTG in the summer of 2016.

IICTG is a source for knowledge and information on intelligent construction technologies for public agencies, contractors, consultants, academia, and all other relevant industries. IICTG provides a forum for the dissemination of knowledge concerning the collection, analysis, and application of information relating to intelligent construction technologies.

IICTG membership is free and open to representatives of public agencies or organizations active in or interested in the scope of IICTG. If you are interested in becoming a member, contact IICTG.

IC Champ Dr. George Chang Receives ASTM Award

Dr. George K. Chang, The Transtec Group’s Director of Research and a champion for Intelligent Compaction, is the recipient of the 2017 Billiard-Stubstad Award. ASTM International Committee E17 on Vehicle – Pavement Systems presented the award to Dr. Chang in recognition of his contributions to improving the use of inertial profiler data around the world and his substantial contributions to the roughness standards preparation and maintenance activities for committee E17.

“Through his work in the field of the measurement, processing and analysis of pavement profiles, Dr. Chang had become a well-known expert in the field of pavement smoothness,” said Dr. Zoltan Rado, chairman of the E17 committee. “He had used and dedicated his expertise and knowledge in the technical and practical pavement profile measurement area to bring unique administrative contributions and leadership in the standards development work of ASTM E17. His work within the E17 committee had made it possible for the committee to develop and maintain relevant standards that support the industry and user communities as well as state and national regulatory bodies with pavement roughness measurement and analysis standards.”

Dr. Chang has also previously received the 2007 Kummer Lecture Award and the 2010 Meyer-Horne Outstanding Achievement Award from ASTM.

The Billiard-Stubstad Award was established in 2015 in honor of Gary Billiard and Richard Stubstad. The award is intended to recognize individuals who have made exemplary technical, practical, and/or administrative contributions to the pavement engineering community through their standards development efforts.

ASTM Committee E17 on Vehicle-Pavement Systems was formed in 1960. The Committee has 11 technical subcommittees that have jurisdiction of over 73 standards, published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volume 4.03. These standards have and continue to play a preeminent role in all aspects important to pavement management technologies, vehicle pavement interactions and intelligent transportation systems.

Dr. Chang is a world expert on pavement smoothness and intelligent compaction. He has extensive experiences in pavement engineering consulting, research, training, and pavement software development. He has been actively involved in many projects that relate to pavement surface characteristics–including friction, smoothness, texture, tire-pavement noise–materials structure design, and intelligent construction technologies. Dr. Chang’s unique expertise is in system/model integration, data collection and analysis, and asset management. He has developed many pavement engineering software applications that have been used as standards around the US and the world. He also co-founded the International Intelligent Construction Technologies Group (IICTG) association in 2016.
