340 km Intelligent Compaction Project in China Desert

China is building the 340 km Altay-Urumqi Expressway highway in the Xingjian desert by using intelligent compaction (IC) technology to solve the compaction monitoring issue and ensure construction quality. This highway is located in Wujiaqu City, FuhaiCounty, and Beitun City in the north of Xinjiang under a harsh environment without proper resources of construction infrastructure. The contractor decided to use 30+ intelligent compaction systems to track rollers’ positions/passes/compaction coverages with the Beidou satellite system, real-time display color-coded IC maps, wireless data transmission, and daily production/quality reports. With the timely, effective, and comprehensive data collection and analysis during the construction process, the construction quality is greatly guaranteed. Though not truly intelligent compaction that uses Intelligent Compaction Measurement Values (ICMV), these elementary IC systems are a good start for building large-scale highways. More information on Intelligent Compaction and ICMV can be found on the one-top-shop IntelligentComnstruction.com website.

China’s Largest Autonomous Paving Project

China has demonstrated autonomous paving at the 280 km Jinde Expressway construction project on April 24, 2021. This is by far the largest intelligent construction in China. Two autonomous XCMG pavers and fix autonomous XCMG rollers were used for this demonstration. The demonstration indicates a workforce reduction of 66% and an improvement of roller coverage of 50%. Safety features were also shown to be effective with electronic geofences, RADAR, eTicketing, remote controls, and intelligent troubleshooting, etc. Read more about this project. The Chinese version can be found here.
